RESUMO

A dichroic dye-doped liquid crystal Fresnel lens was fabricated and investigated to observe the combination of phase and amplitude modulation based focusing. An anthraquinone dichroic dye was doped into a liquid crystal host, which when in the Fresnel lens configuration, generates a Fresnel zone plate with alternating "transparent" and "opaque" zones. The zones were induced by using photo-alignment of a light-sensitive alignment layer to generate the alternating pattern. The voltage dependency of efficiency for the dye-doped and pure liquid crystal Fresnel devices were investigated. Incorporation of dyes into the device yielded a significant 4% improvement in relative efficiency in the lens, giving a maximum of 37% achieved in the device, much closer to the theoretical 41% limit when compared with the non-dye-doped device. The input polarization dependence of efficiency was also investigated, showing very small fluctuations (±1.5%), allowing further insight into the effect of fabrication method on these liquid crystal Fresnel devices.

RESUMO

Switchable two dimensional liquid crystal diffraction gratings are promising candidates in beam steering devices, multiplexers and holographic displays. For these areas of applications a high degree of integration in optical systems is much sought-after. In the context of diffraction gratings this means that the angle of diffraction should be rather high, which typically poses a problem as the fabrication of small grating periods is challenging. In this paper, we propose the use of nanosphere lithography (NSL) for the fabrication of two-dimensionally structured electrodes with a periodicity of a few micrometers. NSL is based on the self-assembly of micro- or nanometer sized spheres into monolayers. It allows for easy substrate structuring on wafer scale. The manufactured electrode is combined with a liquid crystalline polymer-stabilized blue phase, which facilitates sub-millisecond electrical switching of the diffraction efficiency at a diffraction angle of 21.4°.

RESUMO

Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) can provide fast electro-optic switching effects in photonic crystal fibers, which are promising for developing integrated optical modulators to be used for optical telecommunication. The present study describes experiments on capillaries filled with FLCs, which pave the way toward application of FLCs in state-of-the-art solid core microstructured optical fibers. A method to achieve uniform alignment of the helix axis and the appearance of two different switching modes with switching times in the submillisecond range are found. An additional slow relaxation that was reported recently can be attributed to space charge fields, which may appear due to the migration of ions.

RESUMO

Liquid crystal-filled photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are promising candidates for electrically tunable integrated photonic devices. In this Letter, we present group velocity measurements on such fibers. A large mode area PCF, LMA8, was infiltrated with the liquid crystal mixture, E7. The measurements were performed with an interferometric setup. The fiber exhibits several spectral transmission windows in the visible wavelength regime that originate from the bandgap guiding mechanism. The dispersion of these windows is very unusual compared to typical fibers. Our measurements show that it can change from -2500 ps km(-1) nm(-1) to +2500 ps km(-1) nm(-1) within a spectral range of only 15 nm. This leads to multiple zero dispersion wavelengths in the visible wavelength range.
